April is Rosacea Awareness Month, so what is it? According to the Mayo Clinic, Rosacea is:
a common skin condition that causes blushing or flushing and visible blood vessels in your face. It may also produce small, pus-filled bumps. These signs and symptoms may flare up for weeks to months and then go away for a while. Rosacea can be mistaken for acne, other skin problems, or natural ruddiness.
The cause of Rosacea is unknown. However, it is believed to be due to an overactive immune system, heredity, environmental factors, or a combination of factors.
Signs & Symptoms of Rosacea
- Facial blushing or flushing – persistent in the central part of the face
- (t-zone and cheeks)
- Visible veins – small blood vessels on the nose and cheeks break and become visible (spider veins)
- Swollen bumps – many develop “pimples” on the face that resemble acne; these bumps sometimes contain pus
- Burning sensation – affected area may feel warm and tender
- Eye problems – dry, irritated, swollen eyes and eyelids, known as ocular Rosacea
- Enlarged nose – over time, Rosacea can thicken the skin on the nose, causing the nose to appear larger and bulbous (rhinophyma); however this is most commonly found in men.
What Can Cause a Flare-Up?
Several different factors can trigger rosacea flare-ups, therefore it is essential to recognize these factors if you struggle with this condition. Knowing the cause(s) of your individual outbreaks can help you prevent them from occurring as often. Some common triggers are:
- Hot drinks
- Spicy foods
- Alcoholic beverages
- Temperature of environment
- Sun exposure
- Wind
- Emotions
- Exercise
- Drugs that dilate blood vessels (ex. blood pressure medications)
- Some makeup, skin, or hair care products
